A highlight of yesterday turned out to be lighting the Chanukah menorah on the 3rd night.
We forgot to do it when the sky went dark, just returning home from a cocktail party. But after a dreary day without our family celebration it was a thrill to dust off my menorah, fill the jars with candles and grab the lighter ready to watch the glow.
We shut the TV and the kitchen lights, added a bit of soft music, lit the funky blue candles, sang the blessings and enjoyed the candle light together, holding each other tightly.
As a kid, the candle lighting was a prelude to presents. Yes it was fun to use matches and sing a few songs, but on its own the ceremony wasn’t enough.
Now, yes, just the unique light of a candle is more than enough of us and it did warm us, comfort us.
Yes, once again, it’s the simple things in life.
